The four-cylinder turbocharged engine, slick-shifting six-speed gearbox and quattro four-wheel drive ensure swift, efficient progress, but the whole package seems to lack the emotional appeal present in some rivals, and the firm ride is almost unbearable on rough and bumpy roads.
